Constraints on Particle Acceleration from the Extragalactic Γ-ray Background

چکیده

The propagation of γ-rays through metagalactic space is associated with pair creation and subsequent inverse-Compton scattering off low-energy background radiation. As a consequence, γ-rays of very high energy emitted by remote sources are reprocessed into the window from 10 MeV to 30 GeV conserving the injected energy. Any cosmologically distributed population of γ-ray sources therefore contributes to the diffuse γ-ray background in this energy band which is well-determined from recent observations with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). Since the γ-rays trace accelerated particles, the observed flux of diffuse γ-rays also constrains the global efficiency for particle acceleration. Radio galaxies can account for the γ-ray background if their particle acceleration efficiency considerably exceeds ∼ 18% implying that particle acceleration is an essential part of the thermodynamics in these sources.

Multiwavelength Modeling of Tev Agn Observed by H.e.s.s

The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) experiment, a ground-based γ-ray Čerenkov telescope array located in Namibia, has now detected many extragalactic objects, which redshifts range from z=0.00183 up to z=0.2, possibly more. With the increasing performances of Čerenkov telescopes, it now becomes possible to probe these objects at small timescales in γ-ray, allowing the study of region...

Intrinsic Spectra of the TeV Blazars Mrk 421 and Mrk 501

Energy spectra of γ-ray blazars may contain an imprint from the cosmic infrared background radiation due to γ-ray absorption (pair-production) by soft photons constituting the extragalactic background light (EBL). The signature of this imprint depends on the spectral shape of the EBL. In this work we correct the observed spectra of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 for absorption using different possible rea...

Particle acceleration is expected to take place at shocks that form during the process of large scale structure formation. Electrons accelerated at such shocks can upscatter a small fraction of the photons in the cosmic microwave background up to the gamma ray band. Here we make predictions about the detectability of the γ–ray emission from forming clusters of galaxies with future GeV and TeV g...

Blazar Duty-Cycle at γ-ray Frequecies: Constraints from Extragalactic Background Radiation and Prospects for AGILE and GLAST

We take into account the constraints from the observed extragalactic γ-ray background to estimate the maximum duty cycle allowed for a selected sample of WMAP Blazars, in order to be detectable by AGILE and GLAST γ-ray experiments. For the nominal sensitivity values of both instruments, we identify a subset of sources which can in principle be detectable also in a steady state without over-pred...

VHE (Very High Energy, E ∼> 100 GeV) radiation emitted at cosmological distances will pair produce on low-energy diffuse extragalactic background radiation before ever reaching us. This prevents us from directly seeing most of the VHE emission in the Universe. However, a VHE γ-ray that pair produces initiates an electromagnetic pair cascade. At low energies, this secondary cascade radiation has...
